Pact is one of the leading charities working with
prisoners' families. We believe in the unique dignity of every human
being. We believe that this dignity doesn't depend on what you have or
haven't done.
We work with prisoners who have mental health
needs, both male and female and we work to support prisoners families.
So often families bear the stigma and live through the punishment with
little or no support. We work with prisoners' children, using supervised
play, to strengthen family ties that are so threatened by imprisonment. |

'Prisoners' - Families Under Stress'
is a not for profit company ltd.
The group was formed to provide support and advice to families and friends who have somebody, who is close to them, serving time in prison. As the former Chief Inspector of Prisons, Sir David Ramsbotham, stated
"A prisoner may be deprived of their liberty, for the period of a sentence, but at least their daily needs are provided for. However their families, often deprived of the principle bread winner, have to provide for themselves and cope with what has been described as
'imprisonment's side effects', financial and emotional stress, loneliness and discrimination, and pressure of travelling long distances to visit a person in
prison".

The imprisonment of a relative can have a huge
impact on their family:
 | Risk
to housing tenure; |
 | Financial
pressures; |
 | Problems
in caring for children and the impact on the 13,500 children who
lose a parent to imprisonment each year; |
 | Anxiety,
distress and health problems; |
 | Rejection
and stigma by neighbours and the community. |
Families affected by imprisonment face a process of
grief and readjustment throughout the course of arrest, trial,
imprisonment and release proceedings. Families find it difficult to get
the information and support they need to make them feel in control
during periods of crisis and stress.
